The Barnett Government has announced the abolition of the Swan River Trust.  The functions will now be incorporated inside the Department of Parks and Wildlife.

The decision to abolish the Swan River Trust was condemned by the Conservation Council, UWA’s Centre for Water Research and inaugural head of the Swan River Trust Bruce Hamilton, who all cited the need for an independent and transparent watchdog for the fragile Swan River.

Conservation Council of WA director Piers Verstegen made the following comments:

It appears that government has given up on tackling the serious issues facing the river and now they are trying to make the issue go away by removing the body that monitors the condition of the river. West Australian 27/9/2013

The board would remain intact to advise the Minister.
